Happy Cat Month: Alice, Lucy, and the Art They Inspire

If you share your home with a cat, you already know they bring a lot of love into the house... but never in the same way. Each one has a character all their own: some bold, some reserved, some mischievous, some serene. They claim the sunniest chair, supervise from the counter, and, of course, sprawl across your keyboard. Not because it’s comfortable, but because they notice how much of your attention it gets, and they want to be right in the center of it. Cats let us know when we’ve earned their trust, slipping into our routines, and if we break them, they’re quick to remind us. That’s what makes living with them quirky and special.

Alice & Lucy

In my home, that furry presence takes the shape of Alice and Lucy. Alice came first, a thoughtful calico with a calm, loving air who spent her early years as my studio cat, moving with me from one bench to the next. A couple of years later, I rescued Lucy, a tuxedo kitten with cow-like markings and a frisky streak that turned the studio into her playground. She got herself into so many predicaments that required thumbs to escape, I spent more time rescuing her than working. And because she and Alice have become inseparable, I moved them both into the house. They’re a team, complementing each other in the best ways. Lucy’s spark balances Alice’s calm, and together they’re a pure delight.

What is Happy Cat Month?

Every September, the CATalyst Council invites us to celebrate our cats and give them the love, care, and stimulation they deserve. It’s not just about treats and toys, it’s about deepening the connection we share with these remarkable companions.

Cats are social, affectionate, and endlessly expressive. They mirror our energy, they share our routines, and sometimes they inspire our art in ways we don’t expect.

From Pawprints to Pendants

Over the years, Alice and Lucy have found their way into my copper work.

  • “Hanging In There” Cat – Inspired by Alice, who maintains a queenly grace most of the time… but occasionally misjudges a leap. I look away, pretending I didn’t notice, so she can keep her dignity.

  • “Love Times Two” Plaque – Two cats: one wide-eyed and ready to pounce (Lucy), the other calm as a cucumber (Alice). Stamped with Love × 2, it’s a portrait of their opposite yet complementary natures.

  • Heart-on-Chest Cat – A plump, cuddle-ready feline who wears her love openly. Pure Lucy, whose affection is as generous as her curiosity.

Each piece is heat-treated for warm, russet tones and shaped to capture the humor, love, and individuality of the cats who inspired them.

Celebrate Your Cat

Whether your cat is an early-morning yoga partner, a workbench supervisor, or the warm presence waiting for you at the end of the day, Happy Cat Month is the perfect excuse to celebrate them.

In my home and my art, Alice and Lucy are constant reminders that inspiration often comes with whiskers, a flicking tail, and a personality all their own.
